PCI 913

The PCI-913 Intelligent I/O Controller is a flexible way of expanding system processing power by off loading I/O tasks from the host processor. The PCI-913 can be used as a processing engine for applications ranging from telecommunications and networking to machine control and robotics. The I/O boards are full length PCI add-in cards and support Squall II, IIE, and IIET Modules.

The PCI-913 has the Cyclone Breeze Development Environment resident in the Flash ROM. The Breeze Development Environment accelerates the time to develop an embedded system by taking the risk out of building and testing boot ROMs; providing a resident debug monitor; providing an automatic boot user application feature; and reducing the amount of hardware level programming involved with the System Services calls.

The host development station communicates to the target PCI-913 via the serial console port of the PCI bus. The Breeze Development Environment helps your product get to market faster, with less engineering effort. Cyclone also provides board support packages for pSOSystem and Tornado/VxWorks. PCI-913 boards can be ordered with pSOSystem or Tornado/VxWorks boot ROMs factory loaded into the Flash ROM.

i960 Processors
High-end performance at a lower cost is available with Intel's i960HD66 RISC Superscalar Microprocessor. Features like an on-chip interrupt controller, register cache, large data and instruction caches, and high throughput bus interface make the i960 processor ideal for embedded processing applications. The PCI-913 Controllers support the processor with a local bus clock of 66MHz. Capable of executing two instruction per clock cycle, the i960HD microprocessor is rated at 132 MIPS.

DRAM
The DRAM supports burst transfers using interleaved banks for zero wait state burst performance. DRAM sizing and configuration is handled automatically, thereby simplifying upgrades and eliminating the need for memory size jumpers on the board. The memory is located in industry standard 72-pin SIMM sockets. The PCI-913 is available in two memory socket configurations. The A version of the board supports 8 to 64 Mbytes of DRAM in four straight-up SIMM sockets. The B version encroaches on the adjacent PCI slot.

Flash ROM
With its one or two Mbytes of in-circuit sector programmable Flash memory, the PCI-913 is an ideal platform with which to develop application code. Each of the 64 Kbyte sectors are rated for 100,000 program cycles. Three sectors are reserved for the Breeze Development Environment and boot parameter storage. The remaining 29 sectors are available for application and real time operating system storage.

PCI Interface/Bridge
The PCI Interface/Bridge is a 32-bit bridge device able to operate as a PCI bus master and target. The bridge device features two independent bidirectional DMA channels for data transfers between local memory and the PCI host bus. Four bidirectional FIFOs with zero wait state burst operation are provided: one for each DMA channel; one for the direct master interface; and one for the slave interface. The PCI Interface/Bridge supports peak transfer rates of up to 132 Mbytes/second. The PCI Interface/Bridge also supplies PCI configuration and interprocessor communication resources such as interrupts, mailbox registers, and doorbell registers.

Extended Squall II Module (IIE & IIET) Interface
A second expansion connector has been added for users whose expansion I/O does not conform to the standard 12 square inch Squall II Module. The Squall IIE Module provides 26 square inches for user I/O circuitry. Electrically, the Squall IIE and Squall IIET are identical to the Squall II interface. However, a different connector is used allowing more flexibility in the board to board spacing. The 12mm spacing of the Squall IIE Module allows the entire assembly to reside in a single PCI card slot. One Squall II or one Squall IIE Module can be placed on a PCI-913.

The Squall IIET (Extended & Tall) uses 18mm board to board spacing allowing the concurrent use of both a Squall II and Squall IIET Module. This format, however, forces the Squall IIET Module into the adjacent PCI slot using a total of two PCI slots.

Console Serial Port
An asynchronous serial port is provided for a console terminal or workstation connection. The port supports baud rates of up to 115 Kbps and uses a phone jack to DB25 cable which is supplied with the board.

Counter/Timers
Two 32-bit counter/timers are provided in the PCI-913 and can be programmed to provide periodic timer interrupts.

Status LEDs
Eight user programmable LEDs are provided for diagnostic or user defined applications.
